To enjoy the wildlife aspects of the great outdoors in South Africa, you need to be well prepared!

When working in the bush, it is always a good idea to wear clothing that will blend in with the environment. Reds and bright yellows and white clothing are best left in your suitcase.

Leave your special jewellery safely at home. Cameras are safer kept in an innocuous carrier bag.

When packing your luggage:
In case some of your luggage is misplaced by your airline, ensure that you have enough essential items (such as a toothbrush and other toiletries) in a separate suitcase or with you as hand luggage.

Losing luggage only occurs on rare occasions but, should your luggage only be returned to you after a day or two, you should be prepared and have enough items with you to ensure that you do not suffer inconvenience.

Travel Tips

> Find out what the political situation is in the countries you plan on visiting. Your local embassy, tour operator and recent visitors are always good sources of information.

> Make sure you have to hand the names and numbers of all your contacts such as tour operators, hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, family members etc handy. Keep insurance numbers close by.

> Give your family and friends the numbers and/or your e-mail addresses where they can contact you in an emergency.

> Never pack more than you can comfortably carry yourself. Make sure your luggage is lockable. Try to use luggage that will not immediately identify you as the “wealthy tourist”.

> Secure your valuables in the bottom of your biggest, heaviest and lockable suitcase.

> Carry at least part of your money in cash and the rest in traveller’s cheques.

> Be sure to review any possible allergies you may have with your physician before you leave.
