COURSE: 5 Day Chemical Capture

This course is a comprehensive course for vets (earning CPD points), Vet nurses, managers involved in wildlife work, researchers, game capturers and other, interested parties.

The objective of this course is to teach you the background, facts and science of immobilization of wild animals in a practical, skills development programme.

On completion of the course you will have revised the applicable physiology of capture and the pharmacology of the drugs used. You will understand the preparation and use of the equipment; monitoring, handling and caring for the immobilized animal; loading and transport of captured animals.

The curriculum of the course is designed to give you a background and broad understanding of the following:

Pharmacology in general, with particular reference to drugs that are used in the chemical restraint of wildlife

bullet 2 

Physiology and general anatomy of wild animals

bullet 2 

Basic wildlife immobilization principles including those relevant to:
chemical restraint of wild animals; decision and responsibility; general concepts; safety; and other factors. 

bullet 2 

Chemical capture from the ground and air (the role of the helicopter and pilot)

bullet 2 

Individual species requirements

bullet 2 

Equipment used to administer different drugs (Pnuedart, Dan Inject, Paxarms, etc.)

bullet 2 

Stress and mortality

bullet 2 

Transportation of wild animals

This is a 5 day hands-on course with the main focus on practical exercise.

The Venue: 

The Game Capture School and The Wildlife Centre is situated within the boundaries of the Tambotie Floodlands, Naboomspruit (Mookgophong), Limpopo Province, RSA.

Tambotie is a malaria-free area.

Dr. Paul Huber, Dr. Manie du Plessis, Prof. David Meltzer and other, wildlife professionals

Group size:

Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

  4 -  8 May 2010

A 75%, non-refundable deposit will be required to secure your place on our courses.

Accommodation:
Standard chalets with en-suite toilet and basin, 3 persons sharing. There is an option of a deluxe chalet at extra cost.

All equipment to be demonstrated (dart guns, darts, etc)
Tuition by wildlife professionals and veterinary surgeons
Preparation of darts and darting on the Practice Range
Target shooting from a helicopter
Participation in real capture operations.

The Game Capture School reserves the right to make changes to the program should it be deemed necessary.

Please take note:
Successful completion of this course does not provide you with access to drugs for chemical capture. The use of these drugs is strictly controlled by the Medicines Control Council which administers section 22A of the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act; Act 101 of 1965. These drugs can only be used or prescribed by doctors and veterinary surgeons registered in South Africa.

Note: We will accept applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. A non-refundable, 75%, deposit is payable to secure your place on the course.
The balance will be payable one week before the start of the course.
