Our 10 Day Wildlife Capture and Care Experience offers: The Objective of this course is to teach students the background, facts and science of immobilization of wild animals in a practical, skill-development program.
On completion of the course, students will have: > revised the applicable physiology of capture > revised the pharmacology of drugs used > received guidance in taking care of infant and injured wild animals.
Students will then: > understand the preparation and use of equipment > be able to monitor; handle and care for animals > be able to load and transport captured animals > in effect - be able to do the job!
The course covers the following topics: > Physiology and general anatomy of wild animals > Pharmacology in general with particular reference to drugs that are used in the chemical restraint of wildlife > Basic wildlife immobilization principles including those relevant to: chemical restraint of wild animals; decision and responsibility; general concepts; safety; and other factors. > Chemical capture from the ground and air (the role of the helicopter and pilot) > Individual species requirements > Equipment used to administer different drugs (Pnuedart, Dan Inject, Palmer, Paxarms, etc) > Stress and mortality > Transportation of wild animals > Hand rearing and care principles > Shooting out of the helicopter …… And much more!
10 Day Course :Itinerary (Subject to change): Your first 4 days will be spent on Tambotie Private Game Reserve. This Reserve forms part of the well renowned Nylsvley RAMSAR wetland area which is home to white rhino, disease free buffalo, sable, roan antelope, giraffe, zebra, lion and many more. You will learn, observe and participate in chemical captures, go on game drives, help at the breeding projects and much more.
On Day 5, you will depart for the Lowveld area of South Africa. In the Lowveld, you will spend two nights camping with cameras at the ready exploring this untamed wilderness dream. Subject to availability, you will also meet with Kruger Park Researchers and Veterinarians and learn more about disease control and other management related issues in this well known park.
After spending these days in the beautiful Lowveld of South Africa, we will take a scenic route back to Tambotie.
The last few days will be spent at our hospital learning all about hand rearing and infant care, spending some time at a crocodile farm, breeding camps and learning to dart out of a helicopter.
On your last evening, you will attend our Graduation Ceremony during the early evening. This will be followed by a real, African farewell dinner!
Next morning, we will pack up after an early morning breakfast and say goodbye to Tambotie. En route to Johannesburg, we will visit Onderstepoort Veterinary Hospital and University after which you will depart.
